Consultant access
A consultant is someone outside your organisation — a systems integrator, an installer, an analyst — who has been given access to your data so they can help you. Consultants do not belong to your organisation and do not appear on your Users page. SensoCAN grants and withdraws their access on your instruction.
A consultant can be granted access to several organisations, and they choose which one they are working in at any moment. They only ever see the data of the organisation they currently have active. Your data is never mixed with anyone else's.
What a consultant can see and do
Within your organisation, a consultant works in a workspace of their own containing a dashboard, devices, sensors, device groups and gateways. Unlike an ordinary user, a consultant is not limited by device assignments — they see every device you have, which is what makes them useful for commissioning and troubleshooting.
They can:
- View your devices, and edit device details such as name, description and location.
- Change a device's status.
- View your sensors and edit their details.
- View and adjust a sensor's profile — the thresholds and monitoring parameters that decide when it is considered out of range.
- View your device groups and the readings within them, read-only.
- View your gateways, and run gateway commands: the read-outs that report a gateway's current configuration, and the safe write commands that adjust its beacon scanning — its scan switch, signal-strength filter, duplicate filter and reporting interval — plus a reboot.
They cannot:
- Create or delete devices, or create or delete sensors.
- See or manage your users, roles or permissions.
- Open your organisation settings or your integrations.
- See your alarms, rule chains, deliveries, exports, background tasks or the AI assistant.
- Run destructive gateway commands. Firmware upgrades and reconfiguring which server a gateway connects to are never offered to consultants — those are handled by SensoCAN.
A consultant's edits are ordinary changes to your data, made by someone who is not on your team. Treat consultant access the way you would treat a contractor's key: give it for a job, and take it back when the job is over.
If your account is restricted
If your organisation is on hold, suspended or cancelled, consultants lose access to it in the same way your own users do. They cannot select your organisation and are told that the account is restricted and to contact support. See Organisation settings.
Requesting or withdrawing access
Consultant access is arranged by SensoCAN, not from a screen in your organisation.
To grant access, contact SensoCAN support with the consultant's name and email address and confirm that you want them given consultant access to your organisation. If they are new to SensoCAN, an account is created for them and they will receive their own sign-in details.
To withdraw access, contact SensoCAN support and ask for the consultant to be removed from your organisation. Their access ends immediately; nothing they have already changed in your data is reverted, so review anything you are unsure about afterwards.
It is worth keeping your own note of which consultants have access to your organisation and why, since the list is not visible to you inside SensoCAN.
If you are a consultant rather than an organisation administrator, the Consultant guide describes the workspace from your side.
