Device Groups
Device Groups allow you to organize devices into logical collections for easier management and group-level visualization.
Overview
Device Groups help you:
- Organize devices by location (e.g., "Warehouse A", "Building 2")
- Group by function (e.g., "Temperature Sensors", "Fleet Vehicle Trackers")
- Create hierarchical structures (parent and child groups)
- View aggregated data across multiple devices
Creating a Device Group
- Navigate to Management > Device Groups
- Click + Create Device Group
- Fill in:
- Name: Group name (e.g., "Chicago Warehouse")
- Parent Group: (Optional) Select a parent group for nesting
- Description: (Optional) Additional details
- Click Save
Hierarchical Organization
You can nest groups to create a tree structure:
North Region
├── Warehouse 1
│ ├── Freezers
│ └── Loading Dock
└── Warehouse 2
├── Freezers
└── Office Sensors
To create a nested group:
- When creating a new group, select an existing group as the Parent Group
- The new group will appear as a child in the tree view
Assigning Devices to Groups
Method 1: From Device List
- Go to Management > Devices
- Select one or more devices (checkboxes)
- Click Bulk Actions > Assign to Group
- Select the target group
- Click Assign
Method 2: From Device Details
- Open Device Details
- In the Overview tab, find the Device Group field
- Select a group from the dropdown
- Click Save
Method 3: From Group Management
- Go to Management > Device Groups
- Click on a group name
- Click + Add Devices
- Select devices from the list
- Click Add to Group
Group Dashboard
Viewing a Device Group provides aggregated insights:
Historical Charts
View unified charts showing data from all devices in the group:
- Select Sensor Type: Choose which type of sensor to visualize (e.g., Temperature)
- The chart displays individual lines for each device in the group
- Useful for spotting outliers or comparing performance
Status Overview
- Total Devices: Number of devices in this group
- Online Devices: How many are actively sending data
- Offline Devices: How many haven't reported recently
- Last Activity: Most recent data received from any device in the group
Group Visualization
The Visualize page (if enabled) shows the group structure as an interactive tree diagram, making it easy to understand relationships between devices and groups.
Moving Devices Between Groups
- Go to the device you want to move
- Change the Device Group field to the new group
- Save
Or use bulk operations to move multiple devices at once.
Deleting a Group
- Navigate to Management > Device Groups
- Click on the group you want to delete
- Click the Delete button
- Confirm the deletion
Note: Deleting a group does not delete the devices. They will simply be unassigned from the group.
Best Practices
1. Use Descriptive Names
Name groups by their location or function for easy identification.
2. Keep Hierarchy Shallow
Avoid deeply nested groups (3-4 levels max) to maintain usability.
3. Group by Common Sensors
If you want to visualize group-level charts, ensure devices in the group share similar sensor types.
4. Review Regularly
As your device fleet grows, reorganize groups to maintain logical structure.
